Compassionate Hoarding Support

Compassionate support for hoarding, cluttered living and deep cleaning across Norfolk and Cambridge

Hoarding and complex living situations are rarely "just about stuff". They are often connected to life transitions, trauma, mental health, neurodiversity, physical health changes, bereavement or other challenging circumstances.

At The Clearing Crew, we provide hoarding and compassionate clearance services across Norfolk and Cambridgeshire — including Cambridge, Peterborough, King's Lynn, Norwich, Ely, Wisbech and surrounding areas — with a trauma-informed, person-centred approach. We focus on dignity, respect and practical outcomes while supporting the people involved through every step.

What is Hoarding?

Hoarding is a recognised mental health condition where someone has persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions, regardless of their current financial value. This leads to the accumulation of items that clutter living spaces and can significantly impact daily life, safety and wellbeing.

Hoarding is not about being lazy or dirty.

For many people, clutter and accumulation develop gradually over time due to:

  • Difficulty making decisions about what to keep or discard

  • Strong emotional attachments to possessions

  • Fear of waste or needing items "just in case"

  • Overwhelm that makes starting feel impossible

  • Physical health conditions that limit ability to maintain the home

  • Life transitions like bereavement, divorce, redundancy or caring responsibilities

  • Neurodiversity that affects executive function and organisation

  • Mental health challenges that make daily tasks harder

It's often linked to anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism, trauma, bereavement or other life experiences. For many people, items feel emotionally significant or necessary, and letting go can feel overwhelming or distressing.

The effects of hoarding can include blocked exits, fire risks, unsanitary conditions, pest infestations, and difficulty accessing parts of the home. It can also prevent people from accepting visitors, receiving care support, or using their space safely.

Professional hoarding support recognises the complexity of the condition and works with people respectfully, at their pace, to restore safety and function to their home.

We approach every situation with this understanding. There is no shame in needing or asking for support, and we never judge the conditions of a home or the reasons behind it.

When Hoarding Support May be Needed

Hoarding support may be needed when:

  • Living spaces have become difficult or unsafe to use

  • Fire exits are blocked or fire risks are present

  • Daily activities like cooking, bathing or sleeping in the home are compromised

  • Carers or support workers cannot safely access the home

  • Pest infestations have developed

  • The property condition is affecting tenancy or housing status

  • Eviction notices have been received

  • Someone is returning home from hospital and discharge is delayed

  • Social services or housing providers have raised concerns

  • Family members are worried but unsure how to help

  • The person living in the home wants support but feels overwhelmed about where to start

Professional hoarding support helps address these risks while respecting the person's attachment to their belongings and working at a pace that feels manageable.

Hospital Discharge Cleans and Enabling Care Access

We regularly carry out deep cleans and compassionate clearance to support people returning home from hospital, or to enable care teams and support workers to safely access a property. Sometimes discharge is delayed because the home environment does not currently meet safety or hygiene standards. In other situations, care packages cannot be put in place until the space is addressed — meaning people cannot receive the support they need at home.

  • Our hospital discharge and care-enabling cleaning services can:

  • Clear pathways and create space for carers to work safely

  • Make kitchens and bathrooms hygienic and functional

  • Remove trip hazards and fire risks

  • Meet basic hygiene and care access requirements set by discharge teams

  • Reduce delays in discharge or care plans

  • Support individuals to remain at home independently or with care support

  • Prevent hospital readmissions due to unsafe home environments

This work is carried out quickly when needed, with patience, respect and clear communication throughout. We work collaboratively with discharge coordinators, occupational therapists and care managers to ensure the home meets required standards.

We understand the stress of delayed discharge — both for the person in hospital and their family. Our goal is to remove that barrier as efficiently and compassionately as possible.

What our Hoarding & Compassionate Clearance Service Includes

Our hoarding and compassionate clearance services are tailored to each person and situation. We work at your pace and may include:

  • Methodical clearing and organising of spaces, room by room

  • Sorting items for keeping, donating, recycling or responsible disposal

  • Deep cleaning and sanitisation of all living areas

  • Removing clutter, bags, boxes and accumulated items

  • Clearing pathways and access routes

  • Tackling kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms to restore function

  • Support with decision-making throughout the process

  • Coordination with other specialist cleaning services when needed (such as trauma cleaning or needle sweeps)

  • Discreet waste removal in unmarked vehicles

  • Follow-up support to help maintain the space

We understand that letting go of items can be difficult. We work with you, not against you, respecting attachments and supporting you to make decisions that feel manageable.

How it Works

Initial conversation

We start with a phone call or email to understand your situation. You don't need to have all the details — we'll ask gentle questions to help us understand what support you need.

No-pressure assessment

If helpful, we can visit the property to assess what's needed. There's no obligation, and this helps us give you an accurate idea of timeframe and cost.

Working together

We agree a plan that works for you — whether that's tackling one room at a time over several visits, or a full clearance completed in a few days. We work at a pace that feels manageable.

Respectful throughout

We treat your home and belongings with respect. We'll ask before disposing of anything that might be important, and we always prioritise what matters to you.

Ongoing support

If you's like support to maintain your space after the main clearance, we can arrange follow-up visits or connect you with local support services
